Have you ever felt unworthy?
I remember when my friends and I just played a long day of basketball. Exhausted, drenched with sweat, and just looking haggard. All I wanted to do was just take a shower, change, and relax at home but on that specific day we were invited to a party. Of course we were embarrassed to go because we were so underdressed and not “party ready”. In a sense we felt unworthy because we would be out of place dressed the way we were.
There are times when for some reason or another we can feel the same way towards Jesus. There are times when we can just feel out of place with Jesus and his followers. There are times where we can feel unworthy to follow Jesus. It can be because we have done something wrong or because we feel like we are not living up to the status of a Jesus follower.
I bring this up because for some reason I woke up this morning feeling unworthy. I felt like I was not good enough to follow Jesus. Then I realized something! I felt unworthy because in reality I am unworthy!
What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: ”None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” ”Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” ”The venom of asps is under their lips.” ”Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” ”Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
I felt unworthy because in reality I am unworthy!
Did you see that? “None is righteous”! In verse 23 Paul states “For all have sinned and fall short…”. In other words we are all unworthy! If you ever felt unworthy the truth is because you are.
But wait! If you read on you will see good news!
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Though we are unworthy Jesus makes us worthy! Though left alone there is no way we can be righteous through Jesus we become righteous. Justification & Redemption was given to us as a gift. So the next time you feel unworthy just tell yourself you are and then realize Jesus gave you a gift. A gift of being worthy not because of your acts but because of the act of Jesus.
